这首赞美诗虽然是在1636年左右写的，但一直到了1663年才出版。这首赞美诗前两节歌词的灵感来自于次经西拉书50：22-24，“Now bless the God of all, who in every way does great things.”（现在上帝保佑，所有正在做伟大事情的人）。第三段歌词，来自于一段四世纪写于希腊的荣耀颂，用人认为更早，在公元95年就创作了。
在很多场合可以使用这首赞美诗，不仅仅在感恩侍奉的时候。最常见的是，在崇拜结束时或回应感恩祈祷时使用。也可以在奉献的过程中演唱，可以感谢上帝的祝福。这首赞美诗非常适合教孩子们演唱。
